Some History of American Falls

I recently took a drive around town to see how spring is coming along. I couldn't believe how full the lake was. My mom said we were at 100% before the last rain. They are letting water out of the damn. So I went over to take some pictures on the river side. The pelicans were hanging out at the falls waiting for the fish.

For those of you who are not from here and do not know the history of American Falls. American Falls was named for a falls on the Snake River. This falls no longer exists as it was when it was named. American Falls is the first town in the U.S. to be entirely moved to another location. The town site was moved so a dam could be built. A lake now sits over the old town. The town was moved in 1925. On the river side of the dam, the old power house still stands. You will see it in my pictures. On the lake side, whenever I get around to taking pictures of it, there is a grain elevator still standing. It is a bit of an odd sight to see a grain elevator in the middle of the lake. When the town was moved, they attempted to knock down the elevator, but apparently things were built better back then and it would not come down. When the water is low, it looks like cookie monster took a big bite out of the bottom of the elevator. I will try to take pictures of that in the fall.

And as soon as the trees are in full leaf, I will get pictures of the town. It doesn't look so pretty when the trees are just sticks. We are getting close to everything being green.

So enjoy these till I get more.
